Only a few spots open in Chess Camp
The Roving ChessNuts Chess Camp, Monday thru Friday, July 6 to 10, at our training facility, 12013 76 Street, can only accommodate two more all-week chess students, but could also accept a few more students for just morning sessions or afternoon sessions on Tuesday through Friday.
(Monday sessions are completely booked.)  If you need more information, e-mail rovingchessnuts@shaw.ca or call 780-474-2318.  You need to pre-register for the camp; if you can only attend for a day or two or one or two mornings or afternoons, that is fine as long as we know in advance so we can prepare enough snacks and training materials for each student.
Lots of chess action on city hall steps
Up to 18 chess boards were kept busy most of Canada Day afternoon as The Roving ChessNuts and Society of Alberta Chess Knights held a chess promotion and fun tournament.  Players of all ages and both genders played many games under the sun on the front steps of Edmonton City Hall as other Canada Day festivities, both inside and outside, attracted big crowds.  A total of 17 scholastic players competed in the fun tournament which offered prizes such as Canada hats, Canada drinking glasses and other Canada novelties.  Derek Thomas won the top section round-robin, followed by Tobin Fell while Rayden Lin won the bottom section.  Lots of people picked up information about Roving ChessNuts programs, about Edmonton Chess Club and about the Alberta Chess Association through free copies of the Alberta Chess Report.
New Horizons wins North-South Team Event
Having its A & B Teams win both sections of the Northern Alberta Elementary Team Championships in April was just the forerunner of New Horizons School of Ardrossan proving itself to be the best elementary chess school in Alberta on June 20 in Red Deer.  The A team of David McCullough, Noah Hoffner, Ian McCullough, Marcela Louie and Austin Hesse dominated the first North-South event, beating Calgary Schools St. Vincent and Blessed Damien.  The New Horizons A team scored 17 out of a possible 20 points while the B team scored 8.5 for second.  St. Vincent was third at 7.5 while Blessed Damien closely trailed at 7.0.
Borden Park Outdoor Chess in August
One of the most fun scholastic events of the year has been scheduled for Sunday, August 16, at Edmonton's Borden Park on 112 Avenue.  There is an outdoor scholastic chess tournament, followed by outdoor games and a pot-luck barbecue for players and their families.  Watch for details.
Card Game of Chess - SKAT - introductory workshop
On Wednesday, July 22, starting 7:15 p.m., there will be a free introductory lesson involving SKAT, a European card game dating back to 1810 and involving some of the same skills and benefits of chess.  This session will be held at The Roving ChessNuts, 12013 76 Street.  Please pre-register for this workshop - phone 780-474-2318.
