Summer Chess Learning Opportunities
1.  Friday Classes, 7 to 9 p.m., at Edmonton Chess Club resume August 22 & 29.   E-mail rovingchessnuts@shaw.ca to indicate your desire to participate in these sessions.  New drop in fee will be $5.  Watch for the fall schedule of Friday evening classes starting September 5.

 Here is how Alberta's 12 grade level champs fared
at the 2008 Canadian Chess Challenge:
Grade 1 - Ian McCullough Sherwood Park is the NATIONAL CHAMP
Grade 2 - Jamil Kassam Edmonton won THIRD PLACE
Grade 3 - Diwen Shi Calgary finished in 6th Place
Grade 4 - David McCullough Sherwood Park tied for 8th.
Grade 5 - Desmond Baron Edmonton placed 6th
Grade 6 - Nicka Kalaydina Calgary was 5th
Grade 7 - David Zhang Calgary finished 4th
Grade 8 - Allan Wu Edmonton won THIRD PLACE
Grade 9 - Anthony Wu Edmonton tied for 5th place
Grade 10 - Eric Hansen Calgary is the NATIONAL CHAMP
Grade 11 - Johan Piera Calgary finished in 7th place
Grade 12 - Vitaly Motuz Edmonton took 4th place

On July 20, Derek Thomas on behalf of the Alberta Chess Association and The Roving ChessNuts presented about $1,800 worth of travel chess sets, tournaments sets, clocks and other items to Major Regis Bellemare.  These chess supplies are going to Canadian troops in Afghanistan for their use and for the hosting of international military tournaments at Kandahar and instruction of Afghan children.
